What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness.  It is sometimes also referred to as a ‘focused attention state’ (FAS). During hypnosis, your attention is more focused; you’re more responsive to suggestions; you’re more open to believing what is stated to you and less critical or disbelieving of those statements. At the same time, other areas of your brain may be less focused and less critical.

For some time, neurologists and neuroscientists have been trying to formulate a simplified explanation of what hypnosis is and how it works. The definition of what hypnosis is… expanding all the time as more and more healthful and helping aspects of hypnosis are discovered and more about how the process functions in the brain and what portions of the nervous system are involved.

What Happens to the Brain during Hypnosis?

What has been discovered is that MANY PARTS of the BRAIN are involved in a wide variety of electrical, biochemical and cognitive processes… whose effect is to heighten the function of certain areas of the brain, while depressing the critical function of other aspects of the brain.

The net effect is that the brain is configured to allow the re-imagineering and restructuring of the client's outlook (the dynamics of how those changes occur remains unknown) and conclusions of past, current or forthcoming events.

How Does Hypnosis work?

When the client's brain is properly prepared, the hypnotherapist connects with the clients’ sub-conscious mind. Many authorities believe the sub-conscious is DOZENS or perhaps even MILLIONS-of-times MORE POWERFUL than the cognitive or conscious side of the brain.

When satisfactory rapport with the client has been established, the Hypnotherapist introduces affirming and helping images, words, concepts, and ideas of encouragement, confidence, or revision etc., into the client's subconscious mind about past, current or forthcoming event etc.

The subconscious, being MUCH more powerful than the conscious mind, is able to powerfully grab hold of the new ideas and concepts about themselves and instantly apply them to their current or future situation.

Here’s an example:

Imagine for a minute that an acquaintance is terrified of dogs but wants to be free of that fear so they or their family can have a canine pet. The therapist gently leads the client into a FAS and shares positive images, thoughts, ideas about how peaceable, gentle and safe canines really are.

Because the sub-conscious images and words of safety and security about dogs are so much more powerful than the conscious/ cognitive fear of dogs… the words have a MUCH GREATER net EFFECT on the client's perception of dogs than the conscious/cognitive fear of canines. Because the subconscious is so much more powerful than the conscious mind…the person WILL BECOME LESS FEARFUL and stay less fearful over an extended period of time.

Later, as your acquaintance’s EXPERIENCES with dogs continues to MATCH the ‘dogs are OK’ programming that has been put in place… the positive database is reinforced and the client grows in surety and confidence of their new belief that dogs really are OK.

Why Should I Try Hypnosis?

Because it WORKS SO WELL on so many issues and in so many situations with no side effects whatsoever!

In fact, it works so well that I offer a PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE!  Please see details of the GUARANTEE at the end of this introductory section.

If you had the option, WHY WOULDN’T ONE SKIP the inherent dangers of heart or organ failure associated with surgery or a deadly staph infection;  the risk and wear-and-tear on your liver, kidneys, brain and neural networks from an extended regimen of drugs;  WHY would you NOT SKIP the hundreds of hours of calorie burning in the gym, bike, road or pool for weightloss;

OR the strain and time-consumption of an extended regimen of physical therapy WITHOUT all the RISKS, work and travel to and from the physical therapist entailed with each one?

Allow me to be perfectly clear: There IS NOT a hypnotic protocol for every emotional illness and physical hurt out there.  But there are lots of healing / helping protocols for lots of issues!

Thankfully, there are many hypnotic ALTERNATIVES for the issues mentioned above … and the success rate… depending upon the issue… can be remarkably HIGH compared to conventional medical approaches.

Why not take us up on the FREE evaluation and we can discuss your issue then. You might also look at my list of Issues Addressed by Hypnosis below.

You say Hypnosis has a ‘good success rate’.  How good is ‘Good’?

Well, if we’re talking about weight-reduction and specifically LONG-TERM WEIGHTLOSS …  the success rate for hypnosis directed weightloss is about 80%.  Please see the footnote offered by Drs. Crasilneck and Hall below.

In their book Clinical Hypnosis, Principals and Applications, 2nd Ed., Drs. Crasilneck and Hall relay that ‘the average weightloss is 10 pounds per month… Eighty percent of the patients treated with hypnotherapy lose their weight permanently.’ 4  If you have had a weight problem for any length of time… or tried more than a few diets attempting to become a healthier you… you KNOW that 80% permanent weightloss is a mind-bogglingly amazing rate.

How about a success rate above 76% for a ‘reduction of stress’.  Again, hypnotic stress reduction doesn’t come with a perpetual prescription for mind-dulling drugs; with no drug hang-over or foggy-thinking.  Unfortunately, so many diets, stress or sleeping pills come with a vitality suppressing side-effect. Who needs that! Most folks already struggle with getting everything done in one day.

Grief associated with a divorce or the loss of a loved one are normally difficult issues to make positive headway on.  Fortunately, the mental reframing process allows us to refocus the mental state away from the immediate pain… and more toward the positive things in life. After a hypnotic protocol… the client isn’t straining to think of positive events in the past… their mind is programmed to be filtering thoughts for the good.

If one has a specific fetish with one food or a group of foods… like bread, or chocolate, or pizza, fried or chicken that is where you just crumble in being able to adhere to a standard dietary plan… we normally see about 55% - 75% success rate in making that item or group of items significantly less appealing to the dieter.

How about a success rate of 45% - 65%  ‘reduction of anxiety’ for kids who are being bullied in school? Wouldn’t you be just delighted to have your kid feel that much better! Unfortunately, we can’t make the problem people in your child’s life disappear … but we can change your child’s perspective and apprehension of the situation. And that is a big part of the problem.

How about ‘dramatic improvement’ of 45% - 70% following the trauma of an accident. At times, even a 10% improvement in perceived loss or harm can make a huge difference in a person’s life. We can do so much better than that.

How about a 50% to 90% REDUCTION in pain … with a ZERO percent chance of addiction. At the end of this section, I relay a TRUE account of Ph.D. psychologist Harold Heartburn and how he worked the Psych Ward of a large hospital and performed hypnosis on a guy who wanted to die rather than have his burn bandages changed.  After the hypnotic treatment, the guy never resisted or even whined about having his bandages changed over the course of the next 18 days that he was in the hospital’s care.  A true and well-documented case.

We could go on and on … because HYPNOSIS, or as FOCUSED ATTENTION STATE (FAS) as it is sometimes alternately termed, a works remarkably well on so many issues. In fact, hypnosis works so well, that I have a PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE.  See the details below.

How long does it take for someone to feel better using Hypnosis?

A good question!

Some people begin to feel significantly better IMMEDIATELY (even during the 1st session)… while other heavier or well-embedded issues may take a while to resolve in the client. Every human is a ‘bio-chemical and emotional individual’ and thus no two people are perfectly alike. Because of these organic differences, everyone assesses pain, shame, and harm differently.  Because everyone perceived differently, there is no ‘cookie-cutter formula’ about how long it takes to get well.

Below is a table taken from The Handbook on Clinical Hypnosis, by Harold B. Crasilneck and Thomas Hall … psychiatrists and teaching professors of psychiatry at Southwest Medical School in Dallas, Texas.

In that same chart… one can compare the efficacy of various other healing modalities with hypnosis.

How much do "sessions" cost?

We offer a FREE half hour assessment to evaluate your expectations for coming to us and to jointly assess that you and the hypnotherapist are a good match.

Once we establish that we can develop a working rapport and that you are a good subject for hypnosis… each one-hour session is valued at roughly $100.00  We normally start out new clients with a 2-hour session, which helps the client gain a complete understanding of the hypnotic healing process and then get them solidly on the road to change.

Rates

Sessions can be a LOW as $90 each.

Use this link to schedule an appointment

As a general rule, I recommend a multi-session package for most issues. 5 sessions are for the individual who is truly committed to finally making a life-long change they’ve been thinking about for years. In five sessions, we can utilize a number of proven, effective sub-modalities.

For Effective and Lasting ‘Weight Loss Release’, I recommend 6 to 9 sessions.

For Effective ‘Smoking Cessation’, I recommend 5 to 6 sessions.

A ‘Total Transformation VIP Day’ is $850.00

A 5 session package is $450 (averages $90.00 per hour)

A 3 session package is $285 (averages $95.00 per hour)

If you desire a pay weekly, on a pay-as-you-go single session, the rate is $110… scheduled and paid for in advance on my scheduling program.

A single Smoking Cessation Session is $300

Sessions typically run 60 minutes.  Initial sessions where we are hearing issues and beginning hypnosis run about 2 hours.

How to pay for it…

While hypnosis and hypnotherapy have been recognized by both the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association as valid healing processes… few insurance companies make payments for hypnotherapy. This is not because the therapy doesn’t work… it is because the certification and education qualification process to charter hypnotherapists has not been established by the federal government.

We take cash, local checks, credit cards, and PayPal.

Is Hypnosis Dangerous?

As a general rule, the answer is No.

That being said, one should not operate a motorized vehicle or potentially dangerous piece of equipment (power saw, drill, lawnmower, power-washer, etc.) while in the ‘focused attention state’. In this same vein, while under hypnosis, one will generally not go against one’s own will or behave in a substantially out-of-character manner.

If the hypnotist were to become unresponsive while a client is under hypnosis… the client will come out of the focused-state on their own. Therefore, Hypnosis is relatively danger-free.

Once out of the focused state… all regular living operations can be resumed.
